Preliminary Film Task Evaluation

I worked with Hannah to complete my preliminary task. We worked very well together and managed to complete it and be pleased with the outcome. I didnt use the camera as much as Hannah but i felt comfortable directing the actors and occasionally helping out with the camera part. Our film was planned with firstly drawing out a stroyboard, so that we could film it straight away without wasting any time. Using a storyboard was a good way to plan as we knew by looking at the storyboard exactly what the actors and the camera was doing. we could also erase anything we changed easily. We used dialogue in our sequence as it showed better continuity and just flowed better all the way through. We found inspiration by watching other peoples films in class which gave us a better understanding of what we actually needed to do. We used a camera to film our sequence and also used a tripod to help gain better shots and camera angles. Using a tripod made it easier to do more difficult shots as it was more sturdy than doing it free hand. We then used imovie to edit our film, so that we could edit what we wanted and cut what we didnt want. Things we had to take into account included the 180 degree rule, without this the overall outcome of the sequence wouldnt have been as good without it, so this was our main priority. Another aspect we had to consider was continuity. This was also very important as we wanted the filming to flow without any unwanted mistakes. The overall outcome of our sequence was really good and we were both very pleased with it. However, we did have to
re-film 3 times because of certain things going wrong. The first time we filmed it all went very well apart from the fact that we were then told that we couldnt film ourselves. This was a silly mistake and we have certaintly learnt from it. The second time also ran very smoothly, although on one part of the sequence we found when it came down to editing, that the camera had took a picture a film clip. We then couldnt couldnt film just that part agin the next day, due to the characters wearing different clothes. The last time we filmed went to plan and we were pleased with outcome. Next time we will make sure that we have all the footage before we start to edit. From this task i have learnt that filming and making sure you have involved every aspect is alot harder than it sounds. I think that next time being more organised with everything will definately help. At least now we have made our mistakes, we hopefully wont make them in the real thing.

Eastenders Opening Scene

We were asked to re-create an opening scene from an episode of Eastenders. In doing this it would help us to practice using a camera and get to know camera shots and angles, ready for our prelimenary task.

Evaluation:
The place where we filmed our opening scene of Eastenders was almost the same as the eastenders set. We filmed a bit of it on a staircase, which was similar to the one in Eastenders. We did this so we could film it the same way and so that it gave off the same effect. Most of the camera shots involved in the scene were mid-shot, long shot, so you could see the characters expressions. There were of course others, icluding two shot and shot reverse shot. Establishing shot was not used in this scene as people were already familiar with the surroundings. I think our recreation was fairly accurate as we used all of the camera shots, and we also acted out the plot of the episode of eastenders, to make it abit more interesting for us and the viewer. The succeses of our project were that we chose to do our filming in two different locations, for different parts, and that our group worked well together and remebered the dialogue so it flowed and so we could get on with it alot easier. The failings were that when we filmed the first part of our film we had to do it in two parts because we had to move location as the first location got too crowded to film. I have learnt that the Mise on scene is very important when creating a film. We didnt really concentrate on the lighting in our project as we thought that to get it done was more important. We would have also had trouble due to the location. I have learnt that continuity is important, as without it the scenes dont flow together and the whole thing is a mess. The area i need to work on would be filming, as when my group did the filming i didnt use the camera as i was the one acting the scene out.
Having gained experience using a print based product and a image based product i feel alot more confident using a print based product as i really got into it,whereas i didnt really get chance to use the camera when filming.

Re-created Magazine

To practice using photoshop before our prelimenary task, we were asked to re-create a magazine from the internet.

Evaluation:

All magazines, no matter what kind have to follow different conventions. In this case Q magazine follows most of them including the mast head, slogans, coverlines, sub-headings, pictures. These are intially most of the important ones and are there to attract readers and to make it stand out on the shelves so they actually pick it up. The convention that Q hasn't followed is the 3-colour palette rule, as there are 4 colours on this magazine (pink, white, grey and black). However in some cases magazines sometimes use a 4-colour pallete, and that in some cases is allowed. The colour pallete on this magazine suits the target audience as the colours are not just pointed at one age range or anyone's individual personality. For instance if the magazine was covered in primary colours we would associate it with children, as it would be simple but effective and eye-catching. I think the cover lines entice the audience as they are not all the same font and colour. The font on the cover lines are all different which make it look more interesting and make the reader want to pick it up off the shelves. The sub-headings underneath the cover lines are great for the readers attention and keeps them interested and intrigued to find out whats in the magazine that's so important. I think the magazine cover suits new and regular readers. As the masthead is covered a little with the picture, obviously old readers know what it is but its not covered up that much so that new readers can see what its called too. I have learnt how to use photoshop in the making of this magazine which will be handy for when i do my prelimenary task, i have also learnt that to keep the reader interested you have to use bold and exciting pictures and fonts, etc. I have also learnt that magazines have to follow conventions, so that its not to over-whelming for the reader.
